Key stagesReceipt of applications

If you meet the Minimum Eligibility Requirements, your application will be acknowledged as soon as you submit it.

Sift stage

If you meet our eligibility requirements, you’ll then be sent the Prison Officer Selection Test (POST - see below) within 7 days of submitting your application. Please note that if further checks on your eligibility need to be carried out, this process may take a little longer.

Prison Officer Selection Test (POST) – on-line version

You will be sent an electronic on-line version of the Prison Officer Selection Test (POST) for your completion. Please try to complete this test as soon as possible so that we can continue to progress your application if successful. You will be able to save your test once it has already been started and return to it later if you wish, however, please note that once you begin your test you will only have 7 days to complete it. We will look to notify you of your result within 7 days of submitting your Prison Officer Selection Test.

Recruitment Assessment Day (RAD)

If successful after the online POST, you will be notified via email and invited to book yourself in to an assessment day. Recruitment Assessment Day slots are limited and so please try to book yourself in as soon as possible. When you come to the Recruitment Assessment Day you will be asked to bring fully completed Vetting forms with you, these will be emailed to you once you have booked yourself in.

Please note that you won’t be able to proceed with the day if you do not bring the completed forms with you.

Appointment stage

If you successfully pass both the assessment day and the medical you’ll be offered an appointment subject to satisfactory completion of pre-appointment checks into health, identity, nationality and character, including a criminal record check. If your position involves contact with children under 18 years of age it will be subject to an enhanced disclosure being obtained from the Criminal Records Bureau. On average these checks take 4-6 weeks to complete. Upon completion, you’ll be formally offered an appointment, and a start date will be confirmed. If you’re not offered an appointment immediately, you may be placed on a reserve list and notified accordingly. A reserve list is retained for a period of twelve months to cover future vacancies that may arise.
